How foreclosure sales work in Fairfax County

Virginia mortgage foreclosures are usually non-judicial trustee sales. The trustee advertises the sale in a newspaper with general circulation in Fairfax County and sells the property at public auction, usually at the circuit courthouse. Bidders typically bring a cash or certified-funds deposit set in the notice.

There is no redemption period after a trustee sale. Delinquent property taxes are collected through court-ordered sales run by a special commissioner, which the circuit court must confirm. Sales are often postponed, so confirm the date with the trustee or commissioner shortly before the sale.

Our Virginia data comes from trustee firms' published sale lists and published tax sale notices. It does not yet include every trustee, so some sales in the county are not listed; more coming.

This is general information, not legal, financial or investment advice. Talk to a Virginia real-estate attorney before you bid.
