How foreclosure sales work in Carteret County
North Carolina mortgage foreclosures are usually non-judicial power-of-sale foreclosures. After a hearing before the Carteret County clerk of superior court, the substitute trustee sells the property at public auction, normally at the courthouse. Tax foreclosures are brought by the county tax collector in court (N.C.G.S. 105-374) or by docketing a judgment (N.C.G.S. 105-375), and are sold by a commissioner or the sheriff.
Every sale is followed by a 10-day upset bid period, so the high bid on sale day is not final. Sales are often postponed or cancelled when the owner pays, so confirm the date with the trustee or attorney named in the notice shortly before the sale.
Our North Carolina data comes from the published sale lists of substitute-trustee law firms and from official county tax-foreclosure pages. It does not yet include every trustee, so some sales in the county are not listed; more coming.
This is general information, not legal, financial or investment advice. Talk to a North Carolina real-estate attorney before you bid.

Carteret County foreclosure FAQ
When is the next foreclosure sale in Carteret County, North Carolina?
The next scheduled sale date in our data is October 29, 2026. North Carolina foreclosure sales can be held on any weekday (not a legal holiday) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the courthouse door or the place named in the notice (N.C.G.S. 45-21.23).
How does a North Carolina foreclosure reach a sale?
Most North Carolina mortgage foreclosures are power-of-sale foreclosures under a deed of trust. The clerk of superior court holds a hearing (N.C.G.S. 45-21.16), and the substitute trustee then posts the notice of sale at the courthouse for 20 days and publishes it in a local newspaper once a week for two weeks (N.C.G.S. 45-21.17).
What is the upset bid period?
After a North Carolina foreclosure or tax foreclosure sale, anyone can file an upset bid with the clerk within 10 days. The minimum raise is 5% of the high bid or $750, whichever is greater (N.C.G.S. 45-21.27). Each upset bid restarts the 10-day period; the sale is final only after a period passes with no new bid.
